Media Journal

1.1 Media Journal Assignment                                             Name: 
EWC 4MM - Unit 1

This is your place to keep notes, thoughts, things that inspire you, answer questions to weekly prompts, write interview questions and answers; etc.  I do encourage you to start your own blog and hand in your weekly reflections this way.  Some great sites to start blogs are blogger, wikipages, or wordpress.   

Your Media Journal should include;
q  Answers to weekly prompts
q  Answers to assignment reflection questions
q  Evidence of creative process and writing process during media arts assignments (i.e. brainstorming, interview questions and answers, research notes etc.) (if you are working online, please complete this step in a sketchbook)

This journal is to be handed in at the end of term 1 and at the end of semester 1 for marking.  

You will need to provide your own journal.  It can be a bound lined paper book or a sketchbook, which ever you prefer.  It does need to be bound.

Answers address all the topics that are discussed in the question and show evidence of critical thinking.                /10

Weekly Prompts for Term 1

Prompt 1 - Due September 5th - What is Media?

·         How do you define media? What are some ways you interact with media? What impact does it have on your life?


Prompt 2- Due September 10th – Information Overload               

·         Information is everywhere!  Some of the skills you might need to be successful in finding answers to questions are;  search, paraphrase, linking, bookmarking, tag, reflecting, edit, experiment, problem solve, validate!  You cannot simply search in google to find your opinion.  You must piece together information found from a variety of sources in order to form your own independent opinion.

·         Answer the following question using any resource you wish.  You must explain, justify and evaluate your opinion and resources.
1.       You have $1000 to donate toward hunger relief.  Which organization in which country would you give it to? Make sure to explain how you came to this opinion based on information you found online. 


Prompt 3 - Due September 17th - Responsibility, Bias, and Control in the Media

·         Why does the media and people who interact with the media need to be responsible? Think of the different responsibilities that Facebook, T.V, news networks, advertisements have to be accountable for.  How can you act in a responsible way when interacting with media? Find an example of an instance where you feel the media or someone was not acting in a responsible manner. 
a.       Describe the issue or topic being discussed
b.      Why do you feel the media/person was not acting in a responsible manner? Did they show bias, if so, how?
c.       What could have been done differently?


Prompt 4 - Due September 24th –, Stereotypes, Mixed Messages, Critical Thinking
·         How do stereotypes exist in the Media? Provide an example.  How can this be harmful to people?
·         Why do we need to be critical thinkers in this age of media information overload?


Prompt 5 - Due October 1st  – Article Proposal
·         Write your proposal for your first feature article by answering the following questions.
-What kind of feature are you writing and why are you interested in this topic?
-Topic and main point of article
-Angle, How are you approaching your topic
-Intent of article(Written; Published. Where? Video? Radio?)

*Note – if you would like it to be published in the Brantford Expositor, the topic needs to connect to something happening at school.



Prompt 6 - Due October 8th – The CBC
·         Explore the CBC website. Who funds the CBC?  Do you think the CBC is important to Canadian identity?  Explain why.  Write down 3 things that you can do from this website. Who is Glenn Gould, and why is there a theater named after him? What is one question you would like to ask CBC?  Name 3 different careers that you could have at the CBC.


Prompt 7 - Due October 15th  - Social Networks and Bullying

·         Bullying through social media is a real issue. Do you think teacher and/or police presence online can have a positive effect to stop this? What are some other solutions you have?
·         Do you think that awareness of this issue has been more present in the Media? Provide an example to support your opinion.


Hand in Media Journal on October 22nd for final grading.  Term 2 Media Journal will be handed out next week.
